Re: Fuel pump problems

The Explorer based fuel system, was that a return or a non-return system. If you hooked a non-return system to a return style pump you will deadhead the pump. This makes them run hot as ther isn't fuel circulation to cool them off. The factory Explorer non-return fuel system is designed to handle th...

Re: Ranger relocated gas tank

In the 80's Rangers had a duel tank option. I think the rear tank was based off a BroncoII.

If it was a custom piece by someone else, it will be nearly impossible to figure out what it is unless you find a previous owner and ask them what they did. Then hope they remembered, correctly.

Explorer compressor to match the Explorer front dress. custom lines. Doc's Blocks has adaptors to convert the Explorer compressor to standard screw on hoses.

Re: interchangeable grills?

If you change all the bolt on front sheetmetal it will interchange. There is one panel on the front that is different that is not easy to change, the cowl. But it is not really needing to be changed if you change the front clip. Expect to need some wire splicing to get the headlights and marker ligh...

Re: Transmission is just about gone.

Sounds like the direct clutch pack fried. If it happened suddenly on a hard acceleration the direct input shaft (the long skinny one inside the hollow one) could have snapped.

If you are doing another AOD, get an '88 and up. They have improved lube to the planatery set

Re: Ranger relocated gas tank

I think the rear tank is (at least based off) a Bronco II gas tank.
Takes the place of the spare tire. Factory duel tanks will have a bed mounted spare tire.

Re: What a new look

I liked rolling over the title and getting a prefiew of the message. Now all it gives me is a date it was posted. WORTHLESS!
Any way to fix that?

A lot is balance. engine is slightly offset to the passenger side to balance the vehicle side to side with just a driver (typical loading). The ring and pinion have an offset to them, the pinion does not line up with the center of the 2 shafts. Sometimes left and right axle lengths are the same, oth...

I just saw a Dewalt one at Home Depot this past weekend. Home Depot will take just about anything (except paint) back.

How are the timing chain guides? I know you already have the pan off, but did you try running the engine without the accessory drive belt? I have seen engine problems that were really accessory drive problems. If not the bottom of the rod, how about the top? Any sloppy wristpins? I can rule out tran...

My way of finding bad rod bearings...
Take each rod and wiggle it. when you get one that is loose you can feel the clearance between the rod and the crank as it flops around. When you get to the bad one, you will know it.

For all pratical purposes the 351 heads are the same as the 302 heads. The 351 heads got a reputation decades ago because a limited number ('69 and '70) had slightly larger valves then the normal small blocks. Back when all you had to work with was stock heads, those were the best you could get. Aft...
