Chris, If you are going to use those stock tube headers, put them to good use as a yard ordiment or a neat wind chime. They really are restrictive. Can't really tell unless you cut them apart, I did to get the EGR bung. See what Malcom wants for his cast iron headers, got to be better than the tube ...

Mod motor Ranger. A lot of magazines had one of the several Rangers made with the 5.4L shown in them, a lot more than I remember.

I had the DJM 2-3 kit on my 2000 Ranger for almost 30,000 miles with no problems that I ever felt. Never had anyone follow me thou. It sure made the truck a lot more fun to drive. Traded in for the exact same in 4x4, Winter up here in Wisconson made me do the change in plans for the swap.

Older cars weighed more and such?

Actually the earlier Ford cars weighed less and were uni-body construction. Even my '66' Ranchero is uni-body. Early Mustangs (65-66) ran about 2900-3200 lbs depending on options. A '69' Fairlane Cobra ran about 3800 lbs with the big motor and auto trans. With a 3.50 gear would run 14.9 in the 1/4. ...

Central Coast Mustang

Malcolm, Sorry for the bad attitude you ran into at CCM, thought they might be the answer to your problems. As far as the coatings, I went with the coating by "Jet Hot". I was sold both by that's the coating the Ford uses and by the article in Car Craft, it's included in their web site. Tu...

Headers for the "P" heads

Malcolm, Might want to give Central Coast Mustang a try. They have listed five different headers that will fit the "P" heads. http://shop.centralcoastmustang.net/osb/showitem.cfm?Category=2 They list the '94-95' shorty headers (CCM-9495) for the 'P' heads at $219. Tell them that you are th...

Malcolm Not sure if you are aware that with the Explorer motor as what you have as your latest motor, they use a 36 tooth pick-up behind the harmonic balancer as the pick-up for crank speed and is used to feed the tach and computer. Might be another option for some. Stranger says that with the later...

Ford sells replacement axle assemblies for use in Mustangs to switch from the 7.5 to the 8.8. You re-use your existing axel shafts and brakes. From that small description, would seen that the 9" and 10" brakes will interchange.

Not Ranger releated but quite a motor!

This is what can be done with some talent and the right tools. Think this guy has a real future. No problem fitting this one into a Ranger!

Bucky, One thing you will have going for you in having a '98' Ranger and using the Explorer motor is the ease of the swap. Chris missed the fact that with your year truck. both the Explorer oil pan and oil filter should work in your truck. If 4x4, Explorer motor mount will work. If 2x4, Brian B. has...

Chris,
Not sure what will work in your case but the later extended cab (at least mine-2000) use a one piece shaft. Looks to be 3 7/8" in dia. Ought to be strong enuf for a lot of power.

Chris, I'm with Plowboy. Never seen one of my many various Ford pans painted inside, that's 289's, 302's and 428's. See no need to. The rust see might see in your pans is from sitting too long and not being used. Clean up the rust you have and leave it plain. Dave (in Wisconsin - looking at 8-12&quo...

Kev, Did you modifiy your first posting that I thought said a '98' Ranger for $100? Seems to read '89' now. That $100 sounds better for that year. Down side I see is the added trouble of fitting in a 4.6 into it rather than a '98'. Sent you a PM about some up coming car shows in S. Wisconsin. Dave

Chris,
The Explorer pan is 2" deeper than the dual sump Mustang. Think you will indeed need the pick-up for the dual sump. Part number was
F3ZZ-6622-A. That's part of the conversion kit Ford sells, or did at one time.

I was able to use the short filter on my mid-'70' Ford Courrier with no problems but figured the Ranger was too different for it to work. You are right about the little trucks being a lot of fun. I had a good running 289 w/C-4 30 years ago when everyone was doing the LUV V-8 swap. With road gearing,...
