T5 on a 4.6?

Post by MalcolmV8 »

Friend of mine has a 97 Cobra and destroyed two T45s already and is looking for alternatives. Do they make a bell housing to fit the T5 to the 4.6?

Malcom,
If he has already gone thru two T-45's, he might want to move up to a Tremec 500/600. Seems like the T-45 is only rated at 325 lb-ft of torque and the "Z" spec T-5 is only at 350. What kind of power is he putting down? Your running the 3650 I think, don't know the torque rating on it I don't think that the T-5 would be much of an up-grade unless he went to a G-Force or one of the others. Not sure if the Cobra T-45 is different in their rating or not.
Did some digging and heres what I got. I think that McLeod makes a conversion type bell to fit most applications.

this is what i found on allfordmustangs.com------

Borg Warner T45 5 speed manual transmission has an aluminum alloy gear case, tail housing and bell housing. The T45 is used only behind the 4.6L Mustangs from 1996 to 1999. Tremec replaced the T-45 with the Tremec 3650 in 2000. It has single rail gear selector and carbon lined steel synchronizer rings. The T-45 installed in the 1996-1998 GT Mustangs is different than the Cobra Mustangs. The transmission mount position and speedo gear are the main differences. The Mustang Cobra T-45 has a 7 tooth speedo gear. The Mustang GT T45 has an 8 tooth speedo gear. In 1999 all T-45's were changed to the Cobra specs. The T45 case casting number is “1381â€

Thanks for the info. We were thinking T5 just from a cost perspective. They are readily available and cheap and if he wants to spend the money a Gforce unit would hold up nicely.
Not sure on his HP but it's a 97 Cobra which was 305hp from the factory and he has a few basics, cold air, no cats, cat back, pulleys and few other misc stuff. I think his biggest tranny killers is that he removed the IRS and put in a solid axle with a 4 link and it hooks like magic. He takes off from a stop like a sling shot and he drives it hard as hell.
