Explorer shopping
I heard on this forum somewhere that Ford only put 2WD or AWD behind 5.0 V8s, and never 4x4 on a 5.0. But I see a lot of owners selling thier 5.0 Explorer as "4x4" are they just silly and they really are selling AWD or could I have gotten some misinfo from the forum?

I've always been a bit clueless on that topic myself. However I thought that 5.0Ls did have a true 4x4 option giving the Explorers 3 flavors, a 2wd, 4wd, and AWD option...but I don't know that for sure. Although the Autozone website seems to confirm that as you can chose from those 3 options, and when you choose the 4x4 option, the 5.0L is listed.
Someone here can correct or confirm that though I'm fairly sure.

I should've been clearer too. And yes, I knew you were specifically only taking about the 5.0Ls. But as I said above, the AutoZone website seems to believe the 5.0L V8 was an option in 2wd, 4wd, and AWD.

5.0 Explorer were only sold as 2WD or AWD.
Most of the time the AWD is considered 4WD (terms used interchangably). Although not completely correct, when dealing with the public you sometimes have to throw logic out the window.
If you are a used car lot looking at one. You see a transfer case and axle shafts going to the front wheels. You slap that "4X4" sticker on the windshield. Someone wanting 4WD so they can get around in the snow will search for "4WD". Most people are completely ignorant of "AWD" (unless you are talking to a Subaru owner).
So really they are AWD, but if they call it 4WD, it is the same thing in this case.
