When my Bronco II is cold it will start. When It has been run for a while the starter won't turn it over. I can hear the starter engaging. I can't imagine it is the solenoid. Perhaps the starter being so close to the headers (and getting too hot)? All I get is the clicking noise like there's not enough juice going to the starter.

Sounds to me like the starter is bad. Did you load test your battery? I would do a load test on the battery and check how much the starter is drawing when you start it. I doubt its the selinoid. When it wont turn over, cross the seliniod with a screw driver and see what it does. That will bypass that, so if that is the problem it should turn over. But sounds like the starter to me.

If it turns over just fine cold but won't hot all the time it is your starter. GM's were bad about that back in the day, the headers would rap right around the starter and if the starter would just start to go bad the heat would kill it.

I think that they have starter blankets now to try to help this situation.

The stock Explorer header (tube type) come wraped with the silver type foil, the later cast iron ones actually have a heat sheild that bolts to the exhaust manifold down by the starter.
Mac - Back to all red Rangers again, ditched that blue one.

this a common problem with 302's with headers close it heats the starter up than it sticks I had that problem with my '93 when I bought it. I bought a new starter from and it fixed my problem for now

It's a brand new starter! If I keep having problems, I'll have to get one of those low profile starters.

Just more work. Either I have to pull back the tranny or loosen the header just to get the starter out! Know how much work it is to pull a tranny back on a 4x4?

I got some heat tape and I'll try that first. The starter is only about 1/4" from where the header tubes go into the collector.

Thats what I have, a high torque small starter. Got mine off E-Bay allot cheaper than parts store. Never had a problem sence.

a '93 mustang starter is smaller then the older ones.

I just had a problem with mine this weekend. It just clicked. After a few clicks it worked fine. Never gave me another problem all weekend.
