Hey all! Getting ready to swap a 302 carbed with an AOD into my 97. Pulling out the 4.0 and auto Trans. Speedometer in the 97 is electrically controlled and my AOD has a cable for the speedometer. What to do for a speedometer ????

That's interesting. I thought 97 Rangers and Explorers both were still using a cable to drive the speedo. I know at some point, the Explorer 4R70w quit having a VSS/speedo cable provision since speed was being read by the EEC/dash via the ABS system. But I didn't think that change happened until 98-99ish. I'm interested to hear what the solution ends up being too.

I am going strictly off memory here and at my age that's not saying alot. I think the early electronic speedos were driven from the same location on tranny as a cable. Actually when you pulled the unit out of trans the part in the trans actually still looked just like a normal speedo cable but instead of driving a cable it turned inside a sensor which went to speedometer. Most of Ford's speedo cables were all the same so you may be able to pull unit out of stock tranny and put it in the AOD. Again strictly off memory here. You might have to change the gear on the end of sensor to match tranny but then again it may be perfect, then again it may not work at all......
