Email from Malcolm I'll share with the others:

I took my axles into a machine shop today and they said my driver's side
axle has about 20 thousands runout on the flange. The rest of it they
measured and said was within spec. So not to bad. They are facing it today
and I can pick it up tomorrow. Passenger's side they said while not exactly
perfect is within spec and they're not touching it.

However they said there's no way this is the cause of my vibe. He asked if
I could see my wheel wobble (which I could) because 20 thou on the flange
equates to about 1/8" on the end of the rim. They were extremely helpful
and got together and were discussing what it could be. We went though
everything from tires and rims to driveline components. They asked that I
bring in my drive shaft tomorrow for them to look at. They have a strong
feeling that's the cause of my problem.

The one guy walked me though and explained u-joint phasing. Hard to explain
the reasoning in email but basically if the two u-joint flanges on the ends
of your drive shaft are not EXACTLY parallel you will have a vibe that no
amount of balancing can fix. Balancing fixes a vibe you can detect on the
lathe but when the u-joints are bent in a vehicle if they are out of phase
the speed up and slow down as the they rotate is out of phase and you'll
have a vibe. Like I said this is hard to explain in email.

Anyhow I'm hoping they find something wrong with the drive shaft because so
far I still haven't found the cause of my vibe. I picked up a new pilot
bearing just for piece of mind and will be replacing that too. 3:27 gears
should be in the mail. I got a used set from a 99 Cobra with 32k miles on
them for $36. I didn't want to practice my first gear swap on a brand new
$210 gear set from Summit.

I found this site http://pages.prodigy.net/kennethl6/ which sells DVDs on
how to rebuild your 8.8". They look very good. I'm just a bit worried
because I see his auctions on Ebay but I've been emailing him since Sunday
and still not received a response. I think I'll just take a chance on it.
I've had people ignore my emails but respond to the auctions. Plus he has
100% positive feedback with a fairly high rating.

Then all I need is an actual rebuild kit, bearings, seals etc. I have a
hydraulic press in my garage so I can do that part. Hopefully I'll be back
in business soon. I'm not closing everything up though until I found
something that could possibly have been wrong and causing my vibe. It's
very disappointing when you get everything all back together only to still
have the same problem.
