I would recommend trying to make it as close to the same setup as factory. The deal is that you need streight runs of tubing as long as possible before and after the meter to reduce turbulance of the air. Turbulant air won't give the meter a good reading. The meter works by using a hot wire (similar to a light bulb filiment) and the air flows past the filiment and removes some heat. The heat removed is convereted to a Mass Air Flow number. It is a little like black magic. The math isn't easy and to make matters worse the car meters use a slip stream (a small tube in the inside of the meter is where the measurement is taken).

The bottom line is you will never know for sure if your meter is reading right with out building a flow bench. You can measure your excess O2 and back calculate but it isn't dead on.

Hope I make some sense. I work with a similar meter in industry.

: I Have an 85 ranger with a 88 5.0 V8, I mounted my mass air sensor about 4inches from my throttle body- then attached is my giant KandN filter- It is like this for space reasons- does it make a difference on performance, having the air meter so close to the throttle body?
