I might consider tossing the tranny in the back of the truck (a different one of course) and taking it to a tranny shop for a second opinion. You could probably find a few guys that are familiar with the unit to come out to the truck and let you know for sure if 5th is supposed to be that loose. Sure doesn't seem right to me.
Can't see how it would be a problem for someone to give it a quick glance.
