: If you get a chance during your ventures, snap a shot of exactly what you are talking about so I can get a good idea of exactly where it needs to be bashed in, how much was good enough, etc.

I'll see what I can do. Although it's going to be somewhat dependant on your setup. Exact motor placement etc. is all going to affect this. The best way of course is going to loosely place the bell housing and headers on and then try and remove the bell housing and adjust tunnel as needed. I'll take some pics before the tranny goes back in.

:However, those gears are actually at the tail-end of the tranny just outside the main housing aren't they?

They are but maybe I was wrong about the exact locat1on of the noise? Or maybe the noise vibrates up the shaft or something?

: If that is true, see if the 5th gear you were giggling on the MPG is mounted to the shaft that extends to the front of the tranny.

No it's not. The 5th drive gear (the bigger one I was wiggling) is on the end of the cluster which is driven by the input shaft. A few pics of the tranny with the cover off will clarify what I mean.

:but whose to say that the source of your tranny's play is normal?

Exactly. I did measure it though. It's 30 thousands of end play. D&D seemed to think that was normal.

: That T56 is looking mighty nice isn't it?

And pricy too. I've spent way to much on this tranny already. I'm determained to get it working and get my money's worth out of it.

: Oh BTW, while you were out for your drive, did you happen to notice what your RPM @ 70 MPH was in 5th?

I don't remember exactly because my tach is not calibrated yet and reading inaccurate (so I'm not paying a whole lot of attention to it). I want to say the tach was somewhere about 3200 but it's reading 25% high so I'd say about 2400rpm but I don't remember exactly.
My 95 GT had 3:08 gears out back and for the most part I loved it. Every once in a while I thought about changing gears but I never did. Now my Cobra has 3:55s which seem just perfect but it's got a T56 which has different ratios than the T5 so it's not exactly comparing apples to apples.

In the little bit of driving I've done I found the 3:35 first gear with the 3:73 rearend is to much. I'm purposly taking it easy on the brand new motor and crippled tranny and just in pulling off and feathering the gas and splipping the clutch a little because of the surging idle I've spun the tires and turned a little sideway quite a few times. That tells you just how over geared it is. Oh and BTW this is on 17x9" rims with 255/45/zr17 bridgestone potenza tires.
