Thanks for the heads-up on the banging of the drivers side tranny tunnel. Those kinds of tips are exactly what I'm hoping to come across starting my research this early on.

If you get a chance during your ventures, snap a shot of exactly what you are talking about so I can get a good idea of exactly where it needs to be bashed in, how much was good enough, etc.

As for the tranny, if it is the 5th gear, it does makes sense that it'd happen at no-load conditions (i.e. neutral and no heavy throttle). However, those gears are actually at the tail-end of the tranny just outside the main housing aren't they?

If that is true, see if the 5th gear you were giggling on the MPG is mounted to the shaft that extends to the front of the tranny. If it is, the giggling COULD be creating the noise up where you heard it at. It's something to try if you still have the tranny torn apart.

After watching the MPG, it occured to me that the gear teeth are not 90° to the torque. For noise, smoother torque transfer, and wear improvements, they always make gears at an angle so the next set of teeth are transferring torque before the previous set have relieved (or so I've heard). This angle in the teeth would also give a throw-force as well. When under load (both positive and negative) the gears would have a tendency to push or pull themselves to one extent or the other. However during no load/light load conditions, nothing is keeping the gears tight toward one extreme thus the gears would tend to bounce back and forth at the slightest resistance, change in RPM, tide, placement of the moon, etc etc. Point being, maybe some play is normal, but whose to say that the source of your tranny's play is normal?

That T56 is looking mighty nice isn't it?

Oh BTW, while you were out for your drive, did you happen to notice what your RPM @ 70 MPH was in 5th? You mentioned that you couldn't remember earlier, you just remembered it seemed high. With you running a 3.73 RE ration, depending on how high will determine whether I go for a 3.55 or 3.27 ratio on my RE. I'm looking for a LOW idle at crusing speeds and a useful 1st.

Chris
