It sure sounded like in the MPG that you make of the 5th gears, that THAT was the noise you were getting at running speeds. However the noise was coming from the front, not the rear.

Back to square 1? Or do you have any other ideas and findings that have given you new direction?

At least you eliminated my pilot theory. Often researching a problem, you eliminate the possibilities and see what's left. I'm curious to know what this ends up being...

Unfortunately, when it comes to the innerds of a tranny, I'm pretty useless. I've never done any major tranny work to speak of. The only tranny work I have done is replace the input shaft that knocked a tooth off. The truck it was in was an F150 with a 300 I-6 w/single barrel. No torque to speak of so luckily it didn't damage the mating gear.
